Gilles Benichou, del Hospital General de Massachusetts, en Boston, es el autor principal de la investigación, que demuestra que las células T memoria suponen una barrera en relación a la tolerancia de un trasplante.

Superar esta barrera es un objetivo, ya que de esta forma no sería necesario utilizar tantos fármacos inmunosupresores. Las células T, encargadas de una segunda y más fuerte respuesta inmune frente a un antígeno, suponen un arma de doble filo cuando se trata de trasplantes, ya que pueden atacar el tejido donante y provocar el rechazo.

Los investigadores señalan que este hecho había pasado inadvertido en estudios previos porque los ratones de laboratorio, libres de infecciones, no suelen tener células T, que se generan cuando el organismo debe enfrentarse a virus o bacterias. En humanos y primates, acostumbrados a convivir con estos microorganismos, el 50 por ciento de las células T son células memoria.

Más supervivencia
Los autores revelan que los primates con niveles bajos de células T memoria disponen de mejor tolerancia y de más supervivencia después de un trasplante renal, mientras que los animales con niveles elevados suelen sufrir rechazos. Con estos datos, Benichou y su grupo sugieren el cribado en humanos para hallar niveles bajos de células T memoria antes de llevar a cabo un trasplante. Otra opción es usar terapias eliminadoras de estas células.
