El secretario general de Sanidad, José Martínez Olmos, ha comentado que mejorar la salud mental y el bienestar de los mayores es importante para que la Unión Europea pueda “hacer frente a los cambios demográficos”.
Además, este colectivo será “la base de la salida de la crisis económica”, pues en 2050 el 30 por ciento de la población superará los 65 años y el 11 por ciento de ellos tendrá más de 80 años. “En la UE la población está envejeciendo y eso supone un reto para los Estados miembros. La edad avanzada puede acarrear factores de riesgo para la salud mental y para el bienestar, con las implicaciones que ello supone tanto a los sistemas de salud pública como a los sistemas de apoyo social, a los mercados de trabajo y a la economía de los países”, ha señalado Martínez Olmos en la inauguración de la conferencia La salud mental y el bienestar de las personas mayores, organizada por el Ministerio de Sanidad y la Comisión Europea.
Según el secretario general, en España también se prevé “una acentuación del envejecimiento y del desequilibrio entre los grupos de edad”, pues “por cada 100 personas entre los 16 y los 64 años hay 25 de 65 y más años, pero en 2060 se habrá duplicado hasta llegar a los 56 y las personas de más de 80 años, que ahora son uno de cada cuatro mayores, serán la mitad”.
Martínez Olmos ha comentado además que la salud mental es “una prioridad para el Ministerio de Sanidad y para el Sistema Nacional de Salud”, como lo demuestra la Estrategia de Salud Mental, “que se consensuó con las comunidades autónomas en 2006 y que ahora se encuentra en fase de actualización”.
